We Adopted a Whale!

Welcome Tika!!

Hello Room 8 families!! Mrs. Schimm & myself had the idea to adopt a Southern Resident orca for Earth Day!! There are only 75 left in the world and are on the critically endangered list. Just a quick rundown… resident orcas eat mainly fish, mainly the chinook or king salmon. These orcas are starving because of the salmon shortage, pollution & contaminants, and the effects from vessels traffic & their sound.

The children have shown interest in orcas we thought this would be a great teaching moment for Earth day as well as making a transition from sharks to orcas.

Tika is an 18 year old male Southern Resident orca!! His name means, “swift” in the Native American Chinook language. He travels with his mother in the K-pod. Three pods make up the Southern Residents orcas, they are the J, K, & L pods.

We will be getting monthly newsletters about the orcas that will be posted just outside the class on our bulletin board, as well as all the information that was sent out in the blue folders. If you would like more information on adopting an orca please go to www.whalemuseum.org

A huge thank you to the Corn family for their help in adopting Tika so we can make a difference in the lives of these beautiful and intelligent animals.

Mrs. Schimm
